Birthdays get so weird

I always have to do the kid math now. Like my age is based on how old Aidan is. I had him at 30 so I just count it out. Kinda weird that I actually have to stop and think about how old I am turning. And if you ask me mid year, no where near my birth month I probably have no clue. Birthdays lose importance as we age and have children. The celebrations nearly extinct and sometimes you get a cake. Way cooler if your kids are old enough to make cards and pick something nice to make for dinner. I haven't really ever been a big party animal on my own birthday but I love to throw a party for others. I don't know why that is but it just is. I loved last year when my sister threw me a theme party. That felt more acceptable than throwing it for myself. Maybe it's like not throwing your own baby shower, or not hosting your own engagement party. Social stuff is hard. I want to fast forward to when I am an old lady and those rules no longer apply. I will just do whatever.

May is a great month for a birthday because gardening is in full swing by then and I am all happy and positive and things feel fresh and new. I was really meant to be a spring baby for sure. This year is a new leaf for me fitness wise and I am excited to break out my hoarded bin of summer clothes that will actually fit again. It's like getting a whole wardrobe for myself. I keep everything. It can sometimes be considered a problem ( depending who you talk to) but I have yet to be offered a spot on that show, so we're good. It does make it hard to buy me anything though, I was just told. And the yearly question from hubs made me actually sign up for Polyvore finally so I can combo this post as a Birthday Post and a Polyvore files post linking up with sixcherriesontop and others sharing their awesomeness. Here is my wishlist this year. And yes, those are a pair of SHORTS! Whaaaaaaat? I know. Knew me this summer I tell ya.

Ps. If anyone can tell me where that shirt originated I will give you several virtual high fives.

Onward and upward

Though I am sad to say I predict that we will not raise enough to join our local farmers market this year, we are still rocking an awesome start to the garden. Having started almost everything from seed, and most seeds are from our harvest last year, we have over 30 kinds of veggies going now. The plants I have put into the beds already have taken off at a rapid rate! I have to give credit for that to the chickens and all the work they did all winter turning and fertilizing the sold in there. Really cheap labor I tell ya.

So far we have an entire bed dedicated to over 80 kale and lettuce. The radishes, two kinds of beets and 4 kids of carrots are planted and greenhoused for a bit while they grow. And the trellises for our cucumber jungle are built and ready. I cannot wait for this massive crop to be big and amazing already!

There are also some things I have started that will go out onto a farm plot that is a garden share type thing. Where many plant, we all tend in rotation and we all share the bounty. That is exciting too because I don't want to grow corn and pumpkins here where it takes all my valuable real estate with sun hogs or ground cover that need very little maintenance before harvest time. They are all germinating and popping up as we speak in a small greenhouse. It's amazing what can be accomplished with little money and utilizing sun space.

So the list currently for Feltifarm produce is as follows:

  • romanesco (cauliflower)
  • husky cherry tomatoes
  • white corn
  • Cinderella pumpkins
  • yellow crook neck squash
  • watermelon radishes
  • beets
  • butter lettuce
  • red romaine
  • dino kale
  • lace leaf kale
  • arugula
  • dragon carrots
  • yellow carrots
  • danver carrots
  • lemon cucumbers
  • baby arm cucumbers (our own hybrid from last year and the name stuck)
  • gherkin cucumbers
  • marketmore cucumbers
  • mini red bell peppers
  • mini yellow bell peppers
  • red plum tomatoes
  • Italian stewing tomatoes
  • zucchini
  • patty pan squash
  • yellow patty pan squash
  • butternut squash
  • snap peas
  • snow peas
  • purple bush beans
  • yellow wax beans
  • rhubarb
  • artichoke
  • blueberries

A variety of herbs too.

All you need is a little patience and this turns into food. I seriously love it so much.

 (this years seed starts)

(from last years yumminess)

We will be offering a bit of a friends and family CSA or farm share for sale. Veggies eggs and maybe some canned goodies if people are into it. If you are local let me know if you want in. I think this will replace our market plan unless of course the sky rains money.

I got 99 problems but squash aint one

I have been nerding out in the garden plot all spring and summer. It really is therapeutic and all that hippie dippy center your chi type stuff. When life is annoying or stressful I can go water or take cucumber inventory and chill my self out. Works every time. I was doing my thang, elbow deep in dirt and compost and talking to a friend when she told me a few things I never knew about my tomato plants. Sometimes it's really good for us as adults to remember that we do not know everything. Even in our most cherished and practiced hobbies. There are always new tactic and facts to educate ourselves about. I soak it up with joy when friends or family tell me tricks and tips! It makes my little farm kick ass all that much more. So when I was going through the motions of a squash assisting trick I learned from my garden bible, I said to myself  "self, I bet some people would like to know your cool tip". And here we are.

My beloved yellow squash and the oh so delightful pattypan squashes are a constant yearly staple for my belly. I can barely allow them to fully reach maturity before I gobble them up. I really lurk the squash pile and count the little blossoms as they start growing nubs of foodstuff. A few years ago I did some research when, to my horror, they started withering and dying after getting no more than a couple inches in size. I couldn't understand what the problem was. I watered and gave them the best soil. I was seriously saddened as I dead headed little baby squashlets into the compost. My companion books I have grown to rely on are from the flippin 70's but still hold some gospel truth about my edibles. These little guppers were not getting pollinated. The little girl blossoms bear veggies at the base and then the blossom opens. The little boy blossoms bear no food, just flower, on a spindly long stalk.

So I learned what to do to fix my problem and get these yummy squash to finish growing to their fully edible potential. I had to have squash sex. Pollination by way of paintbrush.

Once the blossoms are open you can easily get to the pollen in the center of the male flower and swish around with the brush. And usually there are lots open all at once. I plant huge piles of many squash all together so I like to bring out a few brushes, or Q-tips work fine too, to pollinate each with itself. Cross pollination totally happens and really cool veggies are born, totally different blog post. I will try to make that happen.

Then just swish the pollen laden brush around the inside of the female flower. Super easy and all it takes for your harvest to be bountiful.

I am thinking about cross pollinating a yellow striped zucchini with this kind and see if we get Patty-Stripe-ini? Experiment time!!

Also, if you have an abundance of blossoms like us, you can make the most delectable treat ever! Fried squash blossoms. Just wash them, roll in seasoned flour or breadcrumbs and brown in a frying pan of either hot butter or olive oil. I like the butter because, duh, butter. They are amazing. You can also stuff them with a pinch of rice and cheese or other sauteed veggies of you feel adventurous and serve atop a pasta dish to be all fancy. It makes people marvel at your awesome skills.

This is just so good! All of it!

So there's a busy little life going on over here right now but I wanna stay all up in your read feed with the goodness. I have been planning and crafting and building and most importantly because of this glorious sunshine, gardening. Here are some of the things chugging along at a good pace as of now:

Guest posting for my pal Jenni over at her awesome blog. Giving you some recipes stuff and just generally nerding out as I tend to do. Catch me this next Monday July 1st and many others over the next week or so too. A great way to tap into some bloggers you may not read yet.

A great arts and crafts event is coming up and the booth spots are nearly filled!! This will be a great turnout at an awesome venue with beer and people who hand make incredible wares of a seriously wide variety. To say I am excited about this is an understatement for sure. Like I said, spots are almost full but if you are interested in participating, now would be the time to click the image below for details.

Next week I plan on joining the Portland Preservation Society! I am thrilled to learn new recipes and meet some nerdy food people like myself. I have never canned anything. I have helped with growing and cutting and cooking stuff to be canned, like with family back in the day. But, never actually done the main process or created any cool combos myself. It's like a new culinary skill I can get into. And it will com in handy with the massive amounts of garden stuffs that will ripen and be used. I did grow a few things this year fully intending to use them in this way and in hopes of making the monthly group meetings a special new hobby for myself. You can read about the wonder of what was once a little group and now is growing with newbs like myself every month, here ---> www.facebook.com/groups/portlandpreservationsociety/

Last but not least this. A vid from the vortex of YouTube that my kid adores and plays about 34,987 times a day. But, it's one I like too so it's tolerable after 10 plays, enjoyable up till that. It's very Warped Tour circa 2004 and I dig that it's muppet-y.

"ONE!......ALRIGHT!!" Yeah, it's in my head for good today.

I am going outside to work on this patch of heaven and snacks. You have an amazing weekend ya'll.
